I'm in love. With a Sushi Bar.

The Tuna-Lover's Molly Roll |
Move over, Mizu. Sorry, Sake House. Sakana Sushi is the best sushi in Beaufort County.
This restaurant just opened in the Shell Point BiLo Shopping Center in the old Papa Vitto's space. The new owner's have done an amazing job transforming the space into something fresh and clean, and welcoming. From the crisp, Asian decor, to the waitresses clad in Japanese kimonos, the place is sharp. I understand that Sakana is owned by a husband (chef) and wife (hostess/waitress) team, and the family collaboration and pride of ownership shows in every detail of the establishment.
But it's the food that will keep you coming back.
We ordered a Squid Salad and a Gyoza to start. Both were simply amazing. Unlike many local places, the Gyoza were pan-seared, not fried, and the squid salad fresh and spicy. The food was not only delicious, but came out fast, with a side of Edamame for us to sample. Yum.
Then came the Birthday Roll. I have no idea what this is... the menu is rather secretive... but it comes to the table flaming, and the smell is overwhelmingly enticing. This mystery roll, which I KNOW has shrimp and avocado, is simply to die for... and beautiful to behold. It is BBQ Sushi, and it was love at first bite.

As if we weren't already sold, our other rolls were equally interesting and delicious. The Molly Roll was a dream for a Tuna lover, as was the White Castle, made with my favorite, the delicate white tuna. We also tried the Sakana Roll, which sounded enticing (Applesauce??) and knocked our socks off.

This sushi chef is by far the most talented in Beaufort County, and maybe the surrounding area. A bit of a sushi snob, I am giving Sushi Sakana a big thumbs up--- five stars. No, SIX. This was simply an amazing meal and we are going back.... tomorrow night. Seriously.
Yes, we went back. Need a starter?? Try the Squid Salad:

I'd like to add that the 911 Roll is ridiculously good... but seriously spicy... and the Tai Chilly Roll and Maui Roll, which are a little spicy and a little sweet, were great compliments to the searing heat.
